Patient Success #951: Jason H., Police Officer, Gold Medalist TCA Competition
Activity that lead to injury: Work activities / police training
Official Diagnosis: Impingement, Tendonitis

I originally injured my right shoulder while on duty. The shoulder was so bad that at times I couldn't even lie on my right side without extreme pain. Needless to say, this made sleeping very difficult. I had tried orthopedists, chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapists and even a cortisone shot to help alleviate my chronic shoulder problem. Unfortunately, the results were poor. I usually competed in the Annual Police and Fire Games, in a decathlon style event known as the Toughest Competitor Alive or TCA. (The competition includes 8 events performed on the same day). With my shoulder injured, I wondered if I would even be able to attend let alone compete in the TCA. Weary of the treatments I had already received, I really didn't know what to try next. I heard about other people who had similar problems to mine getting great results with a treatment called Active Release Techniques. Having nowhere else to turn, I gave it a shot. From the very first session, I knew I had made a good choice. The work Dr. Janzen did on my shoulder was so much more involved and thorough than any other prior treatment. Within a few weeks of treatment, my shoulder was well on its way to recovery. I immediately started my training for the TCA competition. Although my shoulder was feeling great, the hesitancy and uncertainty of how my shoulder would hold up under intense competition still plagued me. A couple months later, I flew to Indianapolis for the TCA competition to test it out. By the end of the day, I had accumulated the most points and won the Gold Medal as the Toughest Competitor Alive! I can't believe I was so close to never giving ART a shot. I'm so glad I took that first step.
